About the Role

The underwriting team at Coalition is reliable for building and maintaining systems that combine cutting-edge security data, insurance contract information, and additional proprietary data sources into a determination of cyber risk. You'll be writing backend services and helping design systems that guide an intricate set of business rules, statistical models, and machine learning to generate and track underwriting outcomes.

Our core platform is written mostly in Python with some services in Go. We prefer to use the right tool for the job and make pragmatic judgments about how to scale and decouple systems as we continue to grow. You'll be on an extremely cross-functional team contributing against the heart of our risk.

In addition to working as a backend engineer on our team, you will be supporting our Japanese partner company in using our API.

During your first 1-3 months, you will train with our team, working USA daylight business hours (7 am - 3 pm Pacific time). Afterwards, you will transition to the following hours:

  • Monday & Thursday: 7 am - 11 am PST, 6 pm - 10 pm PST
  • Tuesday, Wednesday, Sunday: 2 pm - 10 pm PST
  • Fri: No work

Responsibilities

  • Support partner company in the Japanese time zone.
  • Contribute high quality code against our risk-scoring, pricing, and underwriting systems.
  • Interface with engineering teams, product managers, and business users to explain and improve our underwriting flow.
  • Integrate both Coalition and third party systems with our underwriting services.
  • Improve our data science, security team, and actuarial relationships by creating model training, serving, deployment, and monitoring infrastructure.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Customer service/support experience is desired.
  • Japanese language proficiency is desired but not required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent training/fellowship/work experience.
  • Experience with Python, Go, or similar languages.
  • Be able to collaborate with your team in a start up environment.
  • Passion, drive, and a deep sense of ownership. We create the systems that keep us and our customers safe!
  • Experience with SQL.
  • Experience with or a desire to learn data science and machine learning concepts.

  • Coalition's individual pay is determined on several factors, including but not limited to, location, level, skills and experience. The US base salary range for this full-time position is $64,000-$125,000, and your recruiter can share more on target salary for your location during the interview process.
