Engineering Manager Realtime Infrastructure

Realtime interactions with your friends and communities is Discord's superpower. Our 150M+ monthly active users send and receive 40M events per second. Messages, reactions, status updates... Everything you see happening in your Discord client live goes through our Realtime systems.

The Realtime Infra team is responsible for building and scaling those systems. Challenges are plenty, and the team is enabling Discord to do something quite unique: putting millions of people in a live, feature rich and persistent, text chat.

We're now looking for a manager to guide the team in its journey to supporting 1 Billion users over the next five years.

What you'll do

• Guide the technical vision and roadmap for Discord's Realtime Infrastructure by working with your team, our engineering leadership and many stakeholders across the company.
• Help your team solve incredibly hard scaling challenges.
• Grow a team of very talented and experienced engineers who have built some of Discord's most critical systems.
• Work with leaders from other departments to establish new processes as we scale our engineering organization from 250 to 1000 engineers.

What you have

• You have 6+ years of experience as a Software Engineer.
• You have 1+ year of experience as an Engineering Manager.
• You're great at coordinating with a variety of teams throughout the company.
• You excel in undefined environments and get excited about finding pragmatic solutions to complex technical or organizational challenges.
• You've worked with high scale distributed systems used by tens or hundreds of millions of users.
• You are passionate about coaching and leading other engineers, but love to dig into technical problems when the opportunity arises.
• You keep up with the industry trends and grow your knowledge and skills to solve technical problems.
