About the role
As a Staff Software Engineer at r2c, you will be a leader on the team, helping influence the product and technical direction of the entire company. We recognize that Staff Engineers do this in a variety of ways - talk to us about what makes you an effective leader! You might use your technical firepower and taste to help solve our hardest technical problems, lean on your communication and leadership skills to help a team deliver on a challenging project, or put on your product management hat and prototype a brand new initiative.
Staff Engineers at r2c work on initiatives that span multiple teams. In this role, you'll collaborate with our community of cloud and program analysis engineers, PMs, designers, and security experts, shaping and executing the product strategy. You'll be an advocate for technical investments that will move the organization forward, a mentor to help others grow and expand their scope, and a solver trusted with executing on our must critical problems.
Our goal is to competitively and fairly compensate every r2cer with a system that equally rewards those who are vocal and those who are less comfortable making demands during the final steps of the hiring process. To that end, we generate internal compensation bands that are used when discussing and negotiating salaries. We update these based on market data to make sure they're above the average for comparable roles.

In this role, you will:
- Own product outcomes, running multiple month-scale projects, typically in parallel
- Run experiments and external discovery to help drive product strategy
- Architect simple, powerful, reliable systems that deliver streamlined user experiences
- Lean on your expertise in a variety of technical domains to help teams execute on their goals
- Ensure continual, high-availability operation of services using modern site-reliability practices, including participation in an on-call rotation
- Advise and mentor r2c engineers via thoughtful code reviews, planning discussions, technical documentation, and formal mentorship
- Help grow our team, by participating in the recruitment and hiring of top engineering talent
You are ideal for this role if you have:
- 7+ years of demonstrated experience writing production backend services or client applications
- Leadership experience helping teams achieve their goals
- Technical expertise in a variety of domains, and a desire to quickly get up to speed in new areas
- An experimental, data-informed approach to identifying technical requirements; at r2c we take a "fail fast" approach, and ship minimally viable work in order to learn quickly
- Excellent, proactive communication, both verbal and written
Some example projects that you might work on include:
- Experiment with a rule recommendation system, then transition that experiment into a fully functioning team
- Build a code-asset inventory library using bespoke Semgrep rules to detect languages and frameworks
- Orchestrate a team of engineers to efficiently double the number of languages supported by Semgrep
- Own the look-and-feel of semgrep.dev, building a unified component inventory library, expediting and improving the quality of front end development
