About the Role

CockroachDB is the distributed SQL database that developers have been dreaming about, and we're confident that it's the best choice for building modern, scalable, resilient applications available today. We've established a new Cloud Growth team to build product experiences and infrastructure to accelerate the growth of our Cloud products. This is a great opportunity to join and help shape the direction, culture, process, and tooling that we use to make an impact in this area. The team focuses on two things: highlighting value and removing friction for our users who are application developers. Our goals are to improve onboarding for our users, guide them to form long lasting good habits, in turn changing the trajectory on the activation metrics, and get our product in the hands of thousands of app developers. Our approach is both customer-focused and data-driven. It's a high-trusting, high-performing, no-ego team with extreme ownership on the outcomes.

Practically, we are looking for someone with a passion for Growth who can generate ideas, coordinate across teams, make data-driven decisions, and is able to execute iteratively, learn and adapt to help elevate CockroachDB Cloud to become the database of choice for building world-changing applications.

You Will

• Collaborate with Product, Data, Design, and Engineering to create strategic customer value.
• Collaborate closely with your Engineering teammates and partner with them on challenging problems.
• Evolve our design system and frontend enablement processes to facilitate collaboration between engineering, design, marketing, and other stakeholders.
• Contribute quality code to projects throughout our ecosystem, in TypeScript and Go, even if you need to learn them on the job to start.
• Contribute to the growth of CockroachDB as a consumer product by designing, building, and testing compelling systems with a focus on the frontend.

The Expectations

In the first month, you will become an integrated member of our engineering team. You'll become familiar with our production systems, software development workflow, and architecture for CockroachDB and CockroachDB Cloud. We believe that it's essential for you to take this first month to become familiar with our technology and our company.

After 3 months, you'll be a fully-fledged member of the team. You will be comfortable contributing to CockroachDB Cloud. You will begin to determine what projects you feel will have a positive impact on developer experience, and may start sketching out plans and drumming up support from your colleagues.

After 6 months, you will likely have shipped some meaningful work in CockroachDB Cloud and are deep into the next big thing that will make our product a joy to use. You will have built relationships with colleagues throughout the company and will use the personal connections you've forged to rapidly iterate and keep development running smoothly for yourself and for any collaborators on your projects.

You Have

• Experience as a developer on a Product Lead Growth team and environment.
• Ideally 6+ years of experience as a developer in a product-focused role but the number of years matters less than the work you've done and the mindset you bring.
• A passion for building beautiful, intuitive, and responsive user experiences that help people succeed at their jobs.
• An understanding of how to deliver value within a rapid, iterative, and data-driven release cycle.
• Experience building modern, highly available web applications, ideally in both front- and back-end capacities.
• Experience developing web applications using programming languages like JavaScript/TypeScript, Go, Python, or Java.
• Experience working with relational databases and SQL.
• A BS in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
• Bonus: Experience with products like Segment, Appcues, Looker for data analytics.
• Bonus: Experience with Experimentation tools.

The Team

You will have the opportunity to report to a member of our engineering leadership team based on the project you work on at Cockroach Labs. In addition, you will get to work closely with the senior leadership.

Reporting to Zane Teh - Senior Engineering Manager

Zane joined Cockroach Labs in 2021 and leads the Cloud Growth engineering team at Cockroach Labs. Previously, he spent years building consumer and entertainment experiences for products like Xbox and Hulu. He was attracted to the people and culture at Cockroach Labs and the incredible opportunity to help drive Growth of our cloud products and to enable a world class front-end environment, team, and product. Zane is originally from Victoria, BC, Canada but now lives just outside of Seattle in Redmond, WA with his wife and 2 daughters. Outside of work he enjoys finding balance and staying active with fitness/sports (basketball, soccer, running) or spending quality time with family and friends.

Key Partner - Vivek Balasubramanian - Senior Director, Product Growth & Serverless

Vivek Balasubramanian heads Product Growth, and Serverless at Cockroach Labs. As one of the newer members of the Product team, he is accountable for growing our serverless product and scaling the self-serve side of CockroachDB. Prior to Cockroach Labs, he was VP, Product Growth at WaveHQ, a fintech platform and before that, headed Product Growth at Shopify. Outside of Cockroach, he spends his time with his wife, 9 month old son, and a year and half old goldendoodle puppy.
