About the role

Every day we solve incredibly hard problems to create surprising and delightful experiences for our users. We're responsible for guiding multidisciplinary teams toward a common goal: shipping high quality products and features on time.

As part of the telematics team, we are responsible for innovating and bringing new sensors and sources of data to reinvent modern insurance. Our platform processes IoT data at scale to extract insights in real time to power the most innovative insurance product in the world.

The Telematics team at Metromile pride ourselves on using the latest technologies to help solve complex business problems and provide our users with the best insurance experience.

You will:

• Design and develop IoT edge software modules that interact with sensors, wireless transmission devices
• Design edge architecture for IoT platform and applications and selects edge hardware, appropriate RF protocols
• Assess feasibility and soundness of proposed engineering solutions
• Work to understand data analytic needs as they will execute within hardware/embedded software design parameters
• Perform hands on testing and testing on the equipment in laboratory and field settings
• Mentor other team members

About you:

• B.S. in Electrical, Computer Engineering, or related fields
• Minimum 4 years of experience as a software engineer
• Solid hands-on software design and development experience on complex embedded automotive computing platforms
• Strong programming skills in C/C++/Python/Go, as well as hands on experience debugging complex embedded software
• Experience with automotive communication network protocols, such as CAN, LIN, UDS, SPI
• Experience connecting IoT devices using WiFi, Bluetooth, BTLE, LoRa
• Working experience with embedded hardware (e.g.: AVR, Cortex-M, Raspberry Pi or Arduino)
• Passionate about technology with demonstrated evidence of being a "maker" or "tinkerer"
• Excellent organizational skills, strong interpersonal / communication skills, leadership, planning and technical/problem analysis abilities

Nice to have:

• Master's degree in Electrical, Computer Engineering
• Minimum 4 years of experience working in Automotive Company
• Familiarity with OBD II
• Familiarity with schematic/PCB layout software, Edge computing platforms and gateways
• Experience with RF, certifications, measurement, testing
• Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure or Google
• Familiarity with a lightweight messaging protocol like MQTT
• Experience with automotive tools, such as Vector CANalyzer, CANoe, CANape
