About the role

Engineering Manager has the important role of working with engineers to improve processes and collaboration across groups. With a strong technical understanding of development and testing processes, the Backend Engineering Manager is uniquely qualified to help drive initiatives to improve core foundations and user experience at Metromile.

You will

• Manage, mentor and empower the team, actively participate in code reviews, and provide higher level technical guidance as necessary
• Collaborate with other engineering groups and designers to deliver strong customer-focused experiences
• Actively contribute to team and company standards
• Partner with recruiting to grow a talented engineering team
• Write server-side code, create robust high-volume production applications, and develop prototypes quickly
• Design and build new features into the Metromile platform, building backend services with Java
• Give clear direction and direct feedback

About You

• Experience managing teams of 3-7 engineers
• Strong Object Oriented development skills and proficiency in Java or another Object Oriented language
• Extensive experience developing large-scale software
• Solid knowledge of data structures and algorithms and excellent programming skills
• A sincere commitment to crafting readable and reliable code
• Strong understanding of database schema design and scalability

Nice to Have

• BS/MS in Computer Science or related field
• Proven ability to lead and advance software teams
• Experience managing through agile transformations is a plus
• Ability to mentor Software Engineers and foster an environment of growth
