Stripe is looking for excellent transactional lawyers to join our fast growing commercial legal team in North America.

Stripe is a global technology company that builds infrastructure for online commerce. We handle billions in transactions each year and enable millions of users around the world to scale faster and more efficiently by building their businesses on Stripe.

You should be comfortable supporting a diverse set of products within a complex and interwoven set of regulations. As a part of our team, you'll be responsible for a wide variety of commercial legal matters supporting Stripe's growing Sales team, as well as building for scale. This role will challenge your legal acumen and critical thinking skills. You must be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities and business needs in an ambiguous environment. In addition, you must be able to work independently, proactively identify areas of need and generate recommended action plans. You will:

  • Work across a spectrum of complex legal, business, and strategic issues
  • Draft and negotiate various types of commercial agreements with users and partners of various types and in relation to various products
  • Draft and maintain Stripe's agreements, written templates and playbooks
  • Lead or participate in projects to improve internal processes and increase the efficiency and scalability of commercial legal support
  • Identify and evaluate business and legal risks, and find creative ways to mitigate them while achieving business goals
  • Help ensure Stripe's commercial relationships comply with federal, state, and local laws and regulations
  • Collaborate with teams across Stripe, including sales, user ops, product, tax and risk
  • Deliver training and help educate internal business partners
  • Manage outside counsel

We're looking for someone who has:

  • Training through working at a top law firm or a large in-house legal team at a company or government agency
  • Extensive experience with technology agreements, particularly hosted services or SAAS agreements
  • Deep knowledge of data protection laws, including CCPA, GDPR, and HIPAA
  • A strong passion for drafting and negotiating commercial agreements
  • Strong communication (both written and verbal) skills and adept at working with cross-functional colleagues
  • Strong project management skills, with attention to detail
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and advance multiple deals happening simultaneously, often on tight deadlines
  • Excellent judgment, and be capable of making smart decisions in the face of ambiguity and imperfect information
  • A strong sense of ownership, willing to jump in and do whatever needs to be done in an enthusiastic, proactive, and resourceful manner, and a strong work ethic with a high degree of accountability and organisation
  • An open and curious mind about an evolving industry
  • JD degree or foreign equivalent with membership in at least one US state bar

Nice to haves:

  • Familiarity with the payment or financial services industries and knowledge of associated regulatory issues
  • History of advising high growth companies, particularly those involved in highly regulated industries, such as financial services, telecommunications, health care, etc
  • Fluency in Spanish (LATAM) or Portuguese at a business level
