The NPI and Sourcing Engineer will provide manufacturing engineering and sourcing support for Backbone's current and new product development efforts to both internal resources as well as external partners.

What You Will Do

  • Work with Product Design, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, SQE & Quality, and supply chain partners & CM's to develop and qualify tools, fixtures, assembly and test equipment, processes, and process flow, DFM and DOE proposals
  • Ensure NPI projects meet deadlines, quality and reliability targets
  • Actively participate in the product development and design review process to assess for manufacturability
  • Drive the DFX and development builds at suppliers and CM's
  • Ensure smooth transition from NPI to mass production
  • Ensure suppliers and CM's meet quality and productivity targets for all products
  • Drive failure analysis and solution implementation across all suppliers and CM's
  • Drive continuous process improvement at all suppliers and CM's with systematic methods- SPC, DOE, etc.
  • Support BOM tracking, cost reduction and yield improvement activities
  • Work with Engineering and Quality teams to qualify new suppliers and CM's
  • Work with Engineering, QA, and Returns team to drive the field failure analysis and reduce customer returns
  • Communicate cost and schedule impacts of manufacturing operations
  • Understand how to drive yield studies, review FAI/CpK data, develop and qualify CMF requirements

Who You Are

  • BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of in-house and outsourced consumer electronics quality/manufacturing experience
  • 5+ years of experience working with Asia/International supply chains
  • Strong working knowledge of materials and mechanical design principals for manufacturing
  • Strong working knowledge of manufacturing automation using robotics and ability to program manage CMs to deploy robotic automation
  • Strong working knowledge of AI tools for manufacturing quality improvement (phone and video AI programs)
  • Knowledge of mechanical, electro-mechanical fabrication, tools, assembly, and test operations
  • Familiar with manufacturing processes for consumer electronics
  • Demonstrate capability to collaborate cross-functionally with Engineering, Quality, Design, and Supply chain teams
  • Experience driving product design using Design for Manufacturing (DFM) methods to ensure robust manufacturability, yields, cost reduction and ability to scale.
  • Good knowledge of designing and reviewing tooling, fixtures, and semi-automated equipment
  • Experience with P&L analysis with ownership of BOM cost, landed costs, and engineering and development costs
