Our legal team is responsible for managing risk across the business while bringing our product and operations to life in a way that is consistent with our mission. We partner with finance, engineering, product, marketing, sales, the people team, operations and more to craft a marketplace that delivers business to our pros while helping millions of customers get their projects done each year. About the Role

As an Employment Counsel, you will support the Company and partner across the Legal Function, with a personal emphasis on labor & employment, compliance, and marketplace risk, and other general issues that the Company encounters. Thumbtack attorneys work on a variety of engaging and challenging legal issues each day and the key to this role's success will be to earn the trust of our business colleagues and provide expeditious, practical legal advice that helps identify and then mitigate risk across our platform.

Responsibilities

Provide counseling and support to HR Business Partners, Employee Relations Business Partners, and the business on employee terminations, performance management, investigations, accommodations, reorganizations, and other employment-related matters
Coordinate and manage employment related projects, including internal process reviews, new policy roll-outs and implementation, regular policy updates and training programs
Draft and edit employment-related documents, correspondence, agreements and processes
Manage legal risks and provide solutions for resolving employment disputes
Manage outside counsel, when necessary
Communicate and collaborate effectively across teams and various roles to educate colleagues about business and legal risks while enabling Thumbtack's success

Must-Have Qualifications

J.D. with 4-6 years of legal experience, preferably in a law firm
Labor & Employment experience
Strong problem-solving, strategic thinking, and written/verbal communication skills
Good judgment and ability to balance risk and productivity in a business environment
Independently motivated, while collaborative in execution
Ability and openness to receive constructive feedback and act on same

Nice-to-Have Qualifications

Spent time seconded to a firm client
CA bar membership
Willingness to learn new areas of law and triage issues with which you're not familiar

Thumbtack is a virtual-first company, meaning you can live and work from any one of our approved locations across the United States, Canada or the Philippines*. When it is safe to gather, we will begin to host in-person events on a regular basis. Remote employees will be expected to travel occasionally for these events to a Thumbtack library or offsite team-building location. In cities with 5+ employees, we are establishing local communities, where employees can gather for local events. Additionally, employees in the San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Toronto and Manila areas will have opt-in access to communal workspace at one of our Thumbtack libraries. We always prioritize the health and safety of our employees. Currently, participation in these events and Thumbtack library use are optional. Both require employees to be fully vaccinated.
