Remote job description

The Role

Pilot's Controller Services team delivers specialized services to a portfolio of customers across a range of industries who need a Controller but may not be large enough for an internal team at their growth stage (think seed through Series B). As the leader of the Controller Services team, you will build world class processes that streamline both the accounting and operations for our clients. As the Senior Manager for Controller Services, you will manage a large and growing team of Controllers who provide expert advice to our clients related to accounting policies and methodology. No day is the same and you will need to adeptly maneuver moving from collaborating with your team on a complex client issue to working with our Bookkeeping team during the monthly-end close process to providing mentorship to the team. As an added bonus, the Sales team may need your expertise to help sell and scope a potential client.

Key Responsibilities

  • Providing guidance and support to clients and your team on complex accounting issues such as new revenue streams, COGS methodology, due diligence during M&A transactions, and audit preparation
  • Building and innovating on our current Controller Services offering to increase value and longevity for clients
  • Managing, building, and mentoring a rapidly growing team of Controllers
  • Managing the team's deadlines and expectations in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
  • Partnering with cross-functional teams (bookkeeping, A/R and A/P, tax, CFO services) to deliver an on-time and seamless monthly and yearly financial close
  • Using industry expertise to recommend process improvements to maximize accuracy and efficiency within our financial statement close process for internal teams
  • Collaborating with Sales and Solution Architecture to improve scoping and pricing decisions
  • Investigating accounting issues to develop methodology based upon accounting principles

About You

Our ideal candidate is a highly motivated self-starter and who possesses all of the following:

  • B.S. or M.S. in Accounting or equivalent; CPA preferred but not required
  • 12+ years of experience consisting of public, private, or outsourced accounting required
  • Strong people manager who thrives on building and growing high performing teams
  • Start up or small company experience that requires you to roll up your sleeves to build and identify process improvements, create out of the box ideas to meet client needs, and ability to balance many priorities
  • Impeccable verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to convey complex accounting concepts to clients who do not possess a technical accounting background and concisely make recommendations to senior leaders
  • Obsessively obsessed with attention to detail and leaves no stone unturned
  • Adept cross-functional partner who thrives on creating a delightful customer experience with other functional partners (Bookkeeping, AR/AP, Sales, Product)
  • Prior experience in E-commerce, Technology, and Crypto a plus
