We're currently hiring for a Global Payroll Lead to join our new global Payroll Team in Tampa, Florida!

TransferWise has already pioneered new ways for people to transfer money across borders and currencies. Our customers can also manage their hard-earned money with the world's first platform to offer true multi-currency banking. Your mission

This critical role is responsible for the overall payroll process, including compliance, internal audit and reconciliation across multiple countries for TransferWise. You will lead a team of Payroll Specialists and work closely with teams such as People Operations, Finance, and Risk, just to name a few!

This role will include partnering with our third-party payroll team and their advisors to identify solutions, reduce errors and process payroll more efficiently. You are responsible for developing robust and detailed processes to ensure the execution of payroll in an effective, efficient and timely manner.

  • This exciting role will also include delivery of projects and initiatives surrounding efficiencies, process improvements and future optimizations of the payroll area.
  • This role reports to the Global Head of Payroll, who is also based in Tampa.

The specifics

  • In working with our Service Delivery Architecture, you will lead our Global Payroll Operations, servicing 16+ countries using Workday (HRIS) and Payroll through an outsourced, Workday Certified Partner
  • Lead and maintain partnerships with payroll and tax vendors providing oversight, monitoring and approvals of all payroll related processes and compliance
  • Partner with stakeholders (internal and external) to ensure all people-related processes and services are implemented and administered effectively, efficiently, and consistently
  • Review and approve pay period results according to the established deadlines, responsible for ensuring the timely submission of payroll inputs to the third party payroll provider
  • Continuously drive for process improvement and lead future optimizations of the payroll area, sponsoring team projects, and an active role supporting the team in their SMEs
  • Recommend new approaches, policies, and procedures for continual improvements in efficiencies of the department

Tax

  • Analyze, build, test, and improve the current Global payroll processes, dabble in Workforce Administration (time and attendance tracking), and drive benefits (related to payroll) and tax processes and procedures
  • Accountable for the accuracy of the international payroll year-end returns, including preparation and delivery of annual tax returns globally (including P35, P60's , P11d returns and their accuracy)

Compliance

  • Maintain compliance across all locations globally regarding payroll and benefits, to include International, Federal, State, and local payroll tax laws. All the while, meeting applicable timelines effectively and efficiently
  • Stay abreast of regulation changes to ensure accuracy and service to customers
  • Own and respond to regulatory agency enquiries (such as HMRC) and takes necessary steps to ensure the payroll vendor fulfills requirements for the company's payroll processes and procedures to be in compliance with all applicable regulations

Financials, audits, and reporting

  • Accountable for correct accounting via our payroll journals, maintaining accuracy of transactions to ensure high quality outputs are maintained at all times
  • Ensure reporting and data is managed on both a recurrent & adhoc basis
  • Escalation point of any finance related queries connected to GL or post payroll reports
  • Support annual financial statement, 401(k), and other audits as assigned

Team leadership

  • Lead, coach and motivate a high-performing, KPI-driven payroll team
  • Set KPIs and Objectives for the team (OKRs), measuring and ensuring these are being delivered, based upon Payroll Team goals
  • Develop a strategy that the team will be able to utilize to reach its goals and objectives
  • You are responsible for providing any training, development and learning needs that team members require, providing best in practice working ways
  • Monitor team members' participation to ensure the training they provide is being put into use, and also to see if any additional training is needed
  • Manage the tasks, work, and project allocation and flow of day-to-day operations, including team and task planning and regular status updates to the team

Your challenges

  • We're evolving our payroll model – you'll have the opportunity to bring your amazing operational skills and strategic leadership to help us build the payroll team as we continue to grow and scale
  • You'll enable us to create efficiencies in our current ways of working and/or develop new ways while we implement payroll processing using our new global system
  • You'll need to call on the functional experts within the People Team to assist you as we expand. This will involve high levels of collaboration across People Operations, Reward, Recruitment, Analytics and Technology teams

A bit about you

  • Payroll leadership of at least 7-10 years in a high growth, product or service led company – this enables you to know how to deal with ambiguity, shifting priorities and come up with innovative solutions
  • Ideally a professional payroll certification to demonstrate your expertise and commitment within the field of payroll such as an APA certification (or similar)
  • Additional education, such as a Bachelor or advanced degree is encouraged, but not required
  • Out of this world payroll skills – you will have had accountability and experience in all forms of preparing, processing, correcting, and auditing in all aspects of payroll
  • Influenced & led multi-state and/or international payroll teams – been able to build, develop, and grow teams across various states or regions
  • Data-based, factual-driven decision making experience – you'll base decisions on metrics and have clear KPIs for all your plans
  • Passion for payroll, leadership, and customer service – You're not just going through the motions at work, you're a payroll junkie! You also relish the opportunity to lead others and foster their personal and professional development, and you also strive for outstanding customer service. Always.
