Embark Trucks

Head of Systems Engineering

Embark Trucks

Remote job description

Embark Trucks is America's Longest-Running Self-Driving Truck Program and is bringing autonomous freight mainstream. As covered by the Wall Street Journal, CNBC, Forbes, TechCrunch and and other outlets, Embark went public via a ~$5 billion SPAC deal in November 2021, and is listed on Nasdaq under the symbol EMBK. Embark is headquartered in San Francisco, CA with operations centers in Fontana, CA and Houston, TX, moving freight daily using our purpose-built transfer hubs. Embark has aligned itself with truck manufacturers, shippers, and carriers to integrate our technology into the freight ecosystem, pursuing a business model where fleets own and operate Embark trucks. This is an incredibly exciting time for autonomous vehicles and our team is looking to grow.

Embark's Product team sets the direction and priorities for our growing Engineering organization. We build close relationships with truck drivers and engineers alike so that we can empathize with them and understand the self-driving problem as deeply as possible. We analyze on-road data with a fine-toothed comb and develop system requirements from first principles. We build and execute test plans to verify our performance against these requirements. We develop strategies and roadmaps for the team using metrics that we build from the ground up. We understand we have a responsibility to communicate these plans and our progress to the company to keep everyone accountable and ultimately accelerate the deployment of safe self-driving trucks.

At Embark, safety is a top priority and systems engineering is responsible for answering some of the major questions around how to make our truck drive safely and reliably. As our Head of Systems Engineering you will be responsible for building and managing the team that takes a deep understanding of technology, our system and a strong grasp of classical physics and engineering practices to define how our truck should drive and how major components should interact. You will be responsible for identifying what roles and subteams need to be filled to create effective requirements, architectures and V&V campaigns. On top of that, you will be tasked with defining the processes by which Systems Engineering interacts with the rest of the company.

Responsibilities:

    • Oversee a world class Systems Engineering team that can use a deep understanding of complex software and hardware systems and data analysis skills to author comprehensive architectures, requirements and develop actionable validation and verification plans.
    • Work with stakeholders across the company to develop scalable processes to effectively communicate Systems Engineering perspectives and ensure that feedback from these stakeholders is properly incorporated into subsequent iterations.
    • Work with technical lead(s) to set the technical direction for the team, and anticipate strategic and scaling-related challenges.
    • Develop testing strategies to highlight potential areas of improvement and prevent regressions.
    • Interface with peers across Executive Leadership, AV Engineering, Hardware Platform, Operations, Data Science and Technical Product Management to identify top priorities to deliver on our milestones as a company.
    • Conduct performance reviews, identify top performers and support their growth into Technical Leadership or Engineering Management roles.
    • Help define, build, and embody Embark's engineering culture and principles.
    • Invest heavily in recruiting by working closely with recruiters, screening candidates, and identifying opportunities for external engagement to improve the Embark engineering brand.

Your Experience Might Include:

    • 12+ years in robotics, aerospace or automotive systems engineering.
    • 6+ years experience building and managing teams who have taken complex software or robotics systems from idea to production.
    • Self-motivated to lead your teams, encourage best practices, and constantly improve.
    • Effective interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills.
    • Emphasize people management and organization.
    • Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent real-world experience.

Benefits

    • A full time, competitive salary with equity
    • Flexible paid vacation from the start
    • 100% of the base insurance option covered for Medical, Dental, and Vision and a buy-up option for other plans
    • Life insurance covered by Embark
    • Access to a Flexible Spending Account & 401K Plan
    • Snacks & catered lunches
    • Work in a fast-growing startup revolutionizing transportation as we know it
