The DevOps Engineer is expected to research, design, implement, test, and maintain software and infrastructure that supports Confidential's business goals. Developer Operations Engineers need to demonstrate good communication skills, be able to problem-solve, be self-motivated, be able to contribute to collaborative software projects, and infrastructure projects. In order to overcome the challenges that Confidential has as a business. Developer Operations Engineers should be able to quickly learn and utilize new technologies and be a source of ideas on how emerging technologies can help Confidential's business.

Confidential is a well-funded digital news startup preparing to launch in Washington, D.C. this fall. Our goal is to create a radically different publication, one that uses a distinct set of formats to deliver a 360-degree view of the most important stories of the day. We are hiring journalists excited to get in on the ground floor and help us shape our identity.

Responsibilities:

Be the principal technical contact for Confidential products and services including:

  • Attending sprint planning and showcase meetings
  • Liaising with the Product team for project status
  • Escalating issues to the Technical Director as required
  • Ensure quality of developed software by team members
  • Drive standards and ensure adoption and adherence by team members
  • Liaising with Confidential's senior leadership team
  • Liaising with 3rd party vendors as project needs dictate

Directly manage engineers including:

  • Regular 1-1 catch ups, training requests etc.
  • Solicit and collate regular 360 feedback from colleagues
  • Provide performance feedback to Technical Director (ad hoc and during annual reviews)
  • Participate in local Engineering planning meetings with Technical Director, other Technical Leads and Principal Engineers
  • Support application development efforts through the development and maintenance of tools, scripts, or ancillary project infrastructure

Contribute to the software design processes including participating in:

  • Whiteboard sessions
  • Prototyping
  • Quickly understand software designs and architectures for technical projects
  • Follow defined development best practices, including wiki contributions, code commenting, and documentation, source control
  • Execute test plans where necessary
  • Develop software
  • Participating in working sessions
  • Author software designs and architectures for technical products
  • Critique software designs and architectures.
  • Peer review colleagues code
  • Provide accurate development task effort estimates
  • Review test plans
  • Critique application wireframes, use cases, user journeys, and designs Identify product development tasks
  • Mentor more junior colleagues

Qualifications & Technical Background:

  • Deep experience with AWS Associate level certification in at least one Cloud Provider
  • Professional experience in Development Operations for at least 1 year professional experience in System Operations (including security operations, systems engineering, and network engineering) for at least 1 year.
  • Experience should ideally cover contact with low-level networking, container and virtualization, and cryptography principles
  • Experience deploying Node.JS Proficient in software development and programming
  • Confluence and Jira Interest in the changing experience of Media consumption
  • Has a keen eye for detail in own and other's work, including documentation
  • Works collaboratively and relates well to all kinds of people and builds and maintains constructive and effective relationships
  • Driven to learn and seek continual improvement
  • Management experience preferred
  • Start-up experience preferred
