As the Director of Data Science, you will own our company's data practice and see your team's insights turned into real products that benefit millions of learners worldwide. In this role, you will be responsible for serving as the head of our efforts toward better understanding our learners' needs and pain points. You and your team of data scientists will gather and synthesize data quickly and accurately, driving product and business choices company-wide. You will be accountable for continuously improving the quality and velocity of our data practice. Going beyond business intelligence you will propose and deliver new applications for data in our customer experience working in partnership with engineering, design, and product teams to better help our learners accomplish their goals.

What you'll do

  • Constantly identify ways to expand the Data Science team's charter to better enable us to serve our learners
  • Be an influencer of ideas and collaborative partner across the entire company to drive the usage and adoption of data in our operations and products
  • Decide how to leverage and implement data science, machine learning, and other quantitative investigative techniques to continuously improve a data platform that offers actionable insights
  • Ensure best practices are employed for capturing, storing, structuring, and employing data
  • Optimize the data science team's processes, tools, and skills to increase velocity and improve quality
  • Synthesize quantitative and qualitative data to ensure we understand the what and why of insights
  • Enhance training and tools to enable others to leverage data themselves
  • Supervise the maintenance and enhancement of our data dictionary and other relevant technical documentation
  • Evaluate data trends to proactively identify opportunities that drive robust business choices
  • Identify and raise opportunities and develop solutions in collaboration with cross functional teams to use data as a strategic asset in product development, marketing, and curriculum development
  • Supervise the development, validation, and maintenance of metrics, reports, forecasts, and dashboards
  • Implement processes for the timely turnaround of ad hoc data inquiry requests
  • Provide technical direction and guidance to data scientists and colleagues across the company
  • Partner with engineering and product to ensure the right eventing is created and validated
  • Size opportunities to ensure teams are prioritizing the most impactful work and establish metrics to measure performance
  • Develop testing plans and validate statistically accurate results
  • Coach and mentor your team to create high performing data scientists in partnership with our People department

What you'll need

  • Reputation as a customer obsessed data and analytics expert
  • A "Founder" mentality - relentless, resourceful, proactive, and results-oriented
  • Minimum of 8 years in an analytical role for a digital business
  • Minimum of 3 years as manager of data scientists
  • Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in communicating the results of an analysis to a variety of audiences
  • Deep hands-on technical experience with SQL, R, Python or other relevant languages as well as publisher/subscriber technologies, databases (e.g., Redshift), analytics packages (e.g., Looker, Tableau), and testing automation
  • Technical expertise to provide detailed feedback on solutions and implementations to data scientists and data engineers
  • Expertise in agile development software methodologies
  • Strong track record of establishing trusted relationships
